The Republic of Hungary is a landlocked country, located in central Europe. The region has been occupied since ancient times, including a Celtic period (from about 450 BCE) and a Roman period (from 9 BCE until the 4th century), but the state traces its roots to the Kingdom of Hungary which was established by Magyar kings in the 9th and 10th centuries. The Kingdom of Hungary then continued to exist for more than nine hundred years with only brief interruptions (although much of its territory was occupied by the Ottoman Turks from 1526 to 1699).
