Of all the foods served in the United Kingdom, fish and chips may be the most famous and noteworthy of all English cuisine. Comprised of deep fried fish served with fried potato strips and mushy peas, fish and chips became a popular meal for Britain's working class during the early 19th century. Fish and chip shops or "Chippies" are common place in the United Kingdom and some believe that the first Chippies were created when South Scottish fried potato shops merged with England's fried fish shops.
