Manchester used to be a part of Lancashire and the only excuse for changing its apparent whereabouts is down to the bureaucratic muscle of northern councillors who, on deciding Manchester had become too cumbersome to be administered alongside other Lancashire towns gave it a space of its own. It always had a strong identity and Mancunians are intent on keeping it so. For a start, they've got an accent so distinct that most Mancunians can be picked out from any crowded cross-section of British accents.
